4. 2010 ANNUAL ARIZONA PARKS & RECREATION ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE
AND TRADE SHOW PARKS & RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD
PARTICIPATION - DISCUSSION
Each year, the Arizona Parks and Recreation Association holds a conference to provide
training for parks and recreation professionals across the state. One day is devoted
to Parks and Recreation Advisory Board members. It is a good opportunity to obtain the 8
hours of required training all at once and to meet with advisory board members from other
jurisdictions. This year, Boards and Commission's Day will be on Thursday, September 2,
2010. Parks and Recreation is submitting information for several awards this year.
5. TOWN COUNCIL STUDY SESSION ON POTENTIAL USES FOR THE WALMART
DONATION FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF NARANJA TOWN SITE - DISCUSSION
CALL TO AUDIENCE: Robert Schumann, Oro Valley resident, reviewed wish list
items on behalf of the Sonoran Desert Flyers:
- Ramada
- Picnic Tables (1-2)
- Grill
- Storage shed to be used for storage and to hold bulletin board
- Toilet at the northeast corner
The board discussed the following:
- Mountain bike trails are inexpensive to construct but need to be outlined in rock.
- Mountain biking should be restricted to the eastern side of the park due to the natural
wildlife community on the western side. There is unused space south of the flying field.
Parks and Recreation Director Ainsley Legner stated that the Town Council has indicated
that they would like Parks and Recreation staff to refine ideas with nonrecurring costs
such as shade structures, site furniture and amenities that fit various ages and
interests. The Town Council had requested that staff look into the cost of providing
irrigation for the screening area to mitigate the views into the neighbor's yards.
Discussion followed regarding:
- Ms. Legner stated that currently, all Town trails are multi-use.
- The steep area on the ridge would be very expensive to fix.
- All non-motorized vehicles are allowed on the trails.
A skate park would cost more that we have in available funds. Lighting would be
important to have because it would often be used after dark.
- There are many skateboarders in the area and no place in Oro Valley to skate.
