HomeMy WebLinkAboutHistorical Records - Miscellaneous (36) Dear Resident of the Town of Oro Valley, I need your vote to be elected to the Council of the Town of Oro Valley in the election on August 14. As you know, I. was appointed to the initial council when the town was incorporated in April. At that time I told the Board of Supervisors (who made the appointments) and the people of this town that, while I favor disincorporation because I feel the area does not have the financial base to support the professional services that a town needs, I would base my decisions as a councilmember on what was best for and desired by the people using the assumption that the town would con- tinue to exist. I hope that you agree that I have kept that pledge. 1 intend to work for the best services we can have with available revenues. Specifically I am committed to contracting for the amount of police protection which the sheriff is now providing. (This is in contrast with Council- men Engle and Kriegh who have publicly announced that the town should start out with a contract for only half this protection. ) I believe in open government with the widest possible citizen participation. I have repeatedly encouraged people to attend our council meetings, and I want to hear the opinions and answer the questions of all the people. I also believe in financial disclosure for public officials and their immediate families so that the public is alerted to any possible conflicts of interest. The only sources of income for my husband and myself are his position at the University of Arizona, my substitute teaching, and small interest payments on savings. We own no property in Arizona other than our home. I have not and will not accept any contributions for this campaign. I was in charge of the committee which did the work necessary to adopt the current zoning and area plan for the town. The people in the area whom I have spoken to want this type of zoning and in general oppose any denser zoning, and I will help them to keep the zoning they desire. I oppose the various large annexation schemes which have been rumored which would increase the services which the town would have to supply and would put the original residents of this area in the minority, defeating the original reason for this town--more responsive local government. . Under no circumstances could I approve an annexation unless I was satisfied that a majority of the households actually residing in that area favored the annexation. (The only legal requirement is approval of the owners of at least half of the assessed valuation which means that a developer could fulfill the requirement without the approval of the residents. ) I have a M. A. in history and mathematics and the time to be a fulitime councilmember. , --App .f Dorothy Montgomery
