`Suspicious' car reported
near missing boy's home
Andy Stryker, the 18 -month-old boy miss-
ing since last Wednesday, may have been
picked up by a man who had been cruising
the Stryker neighborhood twice before the
boy's disappearance, according to a new
witness's statement to detectives.
However, detectives say there is still no
firm evidence of a kidnapping.
Based on sightings last Thursday and
Friday by two "very reliable" witnesses,
detectives think the boy may be with a Mexi-
can couple somewhere in Tucson.
Yesterday, detectives returned to the
boy's rural neighborhood on Cortaro Farms
Rd. near Interstate 10 with a composite
drawing of a Mexican man and vehicle de-
scriptions based on those two witnesses'
accounts.
According to detective Carl Cowland, a
woman who lived to the south of the Strykers
identified a car the Mexican couple had been
seen in as a "suspicious" vehicle in the area.
It had driven by on Cortaro Farms Rd. both
Friday and Sunday or Monday before the
boy's disappearance, she said.
She also identified the composite drawing
as the driver of the car, Cowland said.
"She seemed to be sincere," Cowland said
of the new witness.
Two vehicles were associated with the
Mexican couple in last week's sightings
The first witness reported she saw the
couple and the boy Thursday morning in a
tan Plymouth Fury Il with red Sonora plates.
The sighting occurred near Grant Rd. and
Stone Ave.
The second witness, an off-duty police
officer, reported seeing the couple and child
Friday heading west on Congress St. from I-
10 in a green Ford Galaxie.
It was the latter car the Stryker's neigh-
bor identified yesterday.
Meanwhile, the sheriff's department has
not been able to trace the numbers witnesses
reported seeing on the green car's blue-and-
w'hite Sonora plates.
The car's plates reportedly begin with the
numbers 407.
"We hoped to have had that traced by
now," Cowland said yesterday. But the Mexi-
can motor -vehicle department is not giving
priority to the trace and has no computer
filing system, he said.
The boy disappeared early last Wednes-
day, apparently after following a dog away
from his front yard. A massive search in 100 -
degree temperatures failed to locate him,
and several ponds were drained in an at-
tempt to find him. His parents are Mark and
