The 'asteroid, less than a half a mile in diameter, was discovered on photographic plates made last Nov. 7 and 8 by professor of geology Eugene Shoemaker and planetary scien- tist Eleanor Helin. Two other asteroids also were discovered, a record number for a single observation run on the 18 -inch Schmidt telescope at Palomar Observatory. Shoemaker said rendezvous with the asteroid, designated 1977 VA, would allow mapping of the body and retrieval of samples for laboratory analysis on earth. "Using the Space Shuttle system now under develop- ment," Shoemaker said, "it would be possible to launch a manned spacecraft capable of a six-month voyage to an as- teroid, an exploratory period of a month or so, and a return to Earth." The asteroids, very near Earth, he said, represent the easiest places beyond the moon that man can visit. The asteroid search that has yielded more than two dozen new objects since its beginning in 1973, is supported by NASA's Planetary Geology Program. Asteroid 1977 VA was considered a good candidate for exploration because its orbit is inclined only 2.9 degrees from the plane of the Earth's orbit and because it approach- es the Earth's orbit at the Earth's closest approach to the sun. That was disappointing news for a 21 -year-old who had been lifting weights for nearly 24 months to cure what he, after surveying himself in a full-length nirror, termed "terminally skinny." At the time, Archibald measured 6 feet 1 inch and tipped the scales at 150 pounds, Now the Tucson fire- fighter topples them at 225 and appears to be doing everything right. A photograph of the "new" Archibald brought varied reactions from Citizen staff writers ranging from "that's not very sexy" to "be still, my beating heart." But all of them looked ... and looked. The stunning change on the inside of Archibald is what would keep most looking. It is as if a direct cor- relation exists between the size of Archibald's arms and his peace of mind — a peace that comes only with doing what he's decided to do. The 32-year-old's goal is to compete at an interna- tional body-building contest for men over 40. Already he has cleared some body- and mind-boggling hurdles. Busting out With the first swelling in his arms came admira- tion, his own and others'. "The first thing I did was rush out and buy a T- shirt that was too small and do this," said Archibald, flexing his bicep, tightening his legs and trying to walk. At that point in his development, Archibald said he spent a lot of time noticing when others noticed him. But Archibald stopped his head from expanding to the circumference of his chest, started purchasing extra -large shirts and went back to work. ' Then came riducle. Perhaps the cruelest com- ments came from friends who would ask his wife, Judy, if she wouldn't prefer it if Lee looked like other husbands. Archibald believes that such riducle is only flat- tery from persons who want, but lack the fortitude, to do the same. "You have to learn to handle it," said Archibald. "If it bothered me, I'd quit." No chance of that, promises Archibald, who works out six days a week with two other firemen, Rich Draves and John Ross. The three have pooled their restlewm purchase about $2,000 worth of weights.
