McCollough, head of the geosciences de- partment at the University of Arizona. McCollough said that, with a full reservoir of water behind it, the question is not when Golder Dam will collapse, but why it hasn't collapsed al- ready. At present there is virtually no water behind the dam straddling the Canada del Oro Wash north of Tucson. Earlier this year the state Water Commis- sion inspected the site daily, fearing a buildup of water from heavy rains could cause the earth and rock structure to fail. Lloyd Golder III, who owns the dam, and state officials agreed last month on a plan for repairs to the 13 -year-old structure. McCollough, in a talk yesterday to a mainly stu- dent audience, said engineers who constructed the dam thought they were building on a solid granite foundation. The dam's spillway is over a granite formation, McCollough said, but the rest of the dam lies atop what is termed a port Lowell formation, a sediment far less rigid than granite. The dam, ac- cording to McCollough, is anchored on the east to a granite fault zone and on the west to a relatively loose layer of sediment. Under current plans the dam's spillway will be lowered so that the largest possible reservoir be- hind it could not breach it.
