JOHNSON The Arizona Daily Star When Carl Hayden Community Hospital closed in 1974, Mary Lou Brinkerhoff stayed on to coordinate the closing, and teach patients about available health services. Then, when her boss became administrative director of the Dialysis Foundation of Southern Arizona, he took Brink- erhoff with him. But she was unprepared for the peculiari- ties of the world of artificial kidneys, and she felt lost. Besides, her interest was in patient education. "When I came in and saw all that blood floating around, I said, `No way,' " Brinkerhoff said. "I thought I was too old to learn all those new things." But she later accepted a job as a home -patient nurse with the foundation, 5200 E. Grant Road, and for two years has been teaching kidney patients to perform dialysis at home. Fifteen years ago there were no kidney machines, and renal failure remained a mysterious disease slowly poison- ing patients with their body wastes, she said. And although major Medicare coverage, beginning in 1973, made the treatment available to those who had been unable to afford it, rural patients still had to drive long distances to obtain lengthy, exhausting treatment. But space-age electronics has brought about simpler, less expensive kidney equipment, and the treatment is so refined that Brinkerhoff said, "Everybody should be on home dialysis." Not every kidney patient is a candidate for home treat- ment, though, and some prefer to come to the center. But for those to whom the three gips a week are a chore, the home setup is a blessing. Home dialysis is a team effort, Brinkerhoff said, be- cause at least one other person, often a family member, must assist the four- to six=hour procedure. She said, "We look for people who can follow instruc- tions explicitly, with common sense and the ability to assess a patient — good stable candidates with strong family inter- action and no bickering "There is no doubt it creates a stress that can strengthen or weaken (a family)." Less than two years ago, Boatman, 36, was a geologist in Ajo with the Phelps Dodge Corp., which had been his employer for al- most 10 years. He remarried, and he and his wife, Barbara, have a combined family of four children, now aged 7 to 12. Soon, though, it became clear Boatman's Miracle rock- Natu- ral mosaic jewelry is displayed on a piece of the stone discovered by Ron Boatman. The exhibit can be seen at the downtown Arizona Bank through next Thursday. (Star photo by Art Grasberger) kidneys were not functioning properly, and he would have to begin dialysis, which would require hooking himself to a machine that cleans the blood by running it through an artificial kidney made up of thousands of chemical fibers. Since there are only three artificial -kid- ney centers in Arizona — Tucson, Phoenix and Yuma — this meant traveling to Tucson three times a week. But on his doctor's rec- ommendation, Boatman began training to operate a dialysis machine at home. Before taking an early medical retire- ment, however, he came across a beautiful stone, which; 'after consultation with other geologists was identified as natural mosaic, a rare combination of turquoise, malachite and chrysacola — minerals common to cop- per mines, but never before found in a single stone. Fortunately, the mineral was on private land, and while Boatman worked, his family mined all that is known to exist in the world — about one dump -truck load. Today, the rock is a symbol of hope for dialysis patients everywhere. Specimens have been donated to the Arizona Mineral Museum in Phoenix and to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. The two varieties of the gem are being made into limited -edition jewelry, and the Boatmans, who now live in Phoenix, have pledged 50 percent of the proceeds from its sale to the Dialysis Foundation of Southern Arizona. Some of the money is being used to de- velop a suitcase kidney, which will fit under an airline seat and will mean almost total freedom of movement for dialysis patients, Mrs. Boatman said. The jewelry is on display at the down- town Arizona Bank through next Thursday, and will be exhibited at other branches of the bank in the Phoenix area and in Green Valley. The Boatmans said they gain no profit from the sale of the jewelry. But the jewelry and the home -dialysis program — Boatman was the second patient trained at the center at 5200 E. Grant Load — have turned him into somewhat of a celebrity. Boatman frequently . is called upon to speak about the gem and the home -treat- ment program. Obviously, he's a fan of both. By AL, ARIAV The Arizona Daily Star There was a guy with the beeper attached to his belt, who said he was due to check in at the hospital in an hour; the woman who sells commercials for a Tucson television station; the man who brought a Newsweek article to support his contention radar units can be erroneous .... They all wanted their day in court, as guaranteed by the Constitution. They faced their accuser, pre- sented. their defense, and accepted the judge's deci-- sion, usually in discontent. Even two attorneys were among the dozen de- fendants, most of whom already were at least an hour late for work. One lawyer represented an absentee client; the other was defending himself on a speeding citation. All took part recently in "court day," a monthly ritual in Oro valley, when those who received traffic tickets within the town exercise their constitutional right to a fair trial. They were some of the 990 persons who were issued citations in Oro Valley this year through Aug. 31, an average of 125 tickets per month, or 4.1 a day. In 1978, town police handed out 1,521 citations, an aver- age of 4.2 per day, said Oro valley Police Chief Fred Roof. Roof said police issued 673 warnings to drivers in 1979 up to Aug. 31; last year, 1,141 warnings were given. He also said 113 car -repair orders were issued in 1978, but only 43 were given in the first eight months of 1979. "About 50 percent of the citations last year were given on town streets, while 50 percent were on U.S. 89," Roof said. "The police normally won't ticket for speeding unless (the motorist was driving) at least 10 mph over the speed limit in town,15 on U.S. 89." Court starts at 8 a.m., when the town magistrate — Royal G. Bouschor — positions himself behind a long table, flanked by a town clerk and a deputy clerk. At the September session, associate magistrate Ladd Skinner replaced Bouschor. Skinner first heard motions for dismissals from defendants who claimed they had waited long enough to have their day in court. Three such motions out of the way, it was time for the nitty-gritty — the trials. The man with a hospital date had his case dis- missed. He produced a driver's license, which he allegedly wasn't carrying when stopped by an Oro Valley'policeman. The attorney representing the missing client wanted the case dismissed because the defendant was ticketed in April. No such luck — another trial date was set. The attorney defending himself also received an- other trial date after he told Skinner he had to repre- sent someone in Tucson an hour later. An archeologist argued that police radar guns have given erroneous readings. The Newsweek article he held cited several court cases in which the readings were regarded as inadmissible evidence. Skinner said the radar units oro Valley police use are "quite accurate," adding that their readings are off by no more than a mile or two an hour. The archeologist contended he drives his 1959 truck "conservatively," and there were cars in front of him just before he was cited. "No way I could've, gone 60 (in a 45 mph zone)," he says. "I had to deaccelerate." He called his witness to the stand — a folding chair in front of Skinner. The witness, who pur- portedly 'was riding with the archeologist when he was stopped on U.S. 89, said he wasn't "sure how fast we were going, but not 60.9 Skinner said he was unimpressed with the evi- dence and arguments, found the archeologist guilty, and fined him $18. Next came the waitress, who had to work an extra shift, and missed her original trial. Skinner went easy on her; he reduced the fine for not appearing from $556 to $25. The commercial saleswoman agreed to pay' the speeding fine after confessing she probably was driv- ing "more than 20, but less than 40" mph. But two minutes after she left the courtroom — where the Oro valley Town Council holds meetings -�- she returned, without the smile she had all morning. "I changed my mind," she said. "I want a trial." Skinner, a bit annoyed, asked her to take a seat. Meanwhile, the construction worker, who claimed he didn't see the officer "hiding in the bushes," was on trial. "I don't know how fast I was going, but there was a ditch in the road, and I have ladders on my truck, and I couldn't be going very fast, or else the ladders would have fallen off ...." Or you can buy four boa constrictors for $120, but you have to buy four. They're on special this month. Most of the stock at Pet Ranch Imports is cheaper by the dozen. That's what Mike Jacobson's exotic animal business at 4340 W. Ajo Way is all about. He's a wholesaler who buys and sells non-domestic animals world- wide. His major customers are pet -shop owners. - One lesson Jacobson has learned in the exotic -animal business is never to say he can't get a hard -to -find animal: "Rather than get into a big debate over the phone, I tell them, `I can get you one.' "I will fill any request for the right price — whatever," he says. His procedure with requests for hard -to - find animals is to quote a price: "Maybe five times What it would cost — half now and the rest on delivery. Had a guy call to see if I could get him an elephant." Jacobson gave him a quote of "$5,000 now, and $5,000 on delivery. He never called back." However, when a customer was looking for an African chimpanzee, and wasn't de- terred by the price, Jacobson had to find one. A call to a New York supplier took care of the request. He explained, "They were between $1,000 and $1,500 at the time. I charged him $5,000. But today they are $5,000." Depending on the season, Jacobson will have on hand a dozen varieties of lizards, birds, snakes, tarantulas and turtles. But, he said, "We don't handle any poi- sonous reptiles. I'm just not into that." However, what is or isn't poisonous is the subject of a debate betwoen Jacobson and the U.S. Postal Service, which says Jacob- son can't send tarantulas by mail because they're poisonous. He has about 1,000 tarantulas on hand; he said they're not poisonous to humans, and is trying to convince the pest office of that. "But, based on the word of one guy work- ing in the vertebrate department of the Smithsonian (Institution), the post office doesn't allow us to mail tarantulas — but you can mail scorpions," he said. Despite his business, Jacobson is con- cerned about the fate of -wild animals that become pets: "I won't handle warm-blooded animals." In some cases, he'll make ar- rangements for the purchase, such as with the African chimp, but will not take part in the transaction, he said. "I believe that animal owners who keep wild animals should give them- the best pos- sible care — that goes without saying. But most of the people buying, those exotic wild animals have no busine&-s with them," Ja- cobson said. Owners usually don't t4ke the time to find out about the animal's habitat or special needs, Jacobson said: "Captive -breeding programs are really the salvation of a lot of wild animals. Eventually, I believe we could eliminate the need for import." Though birds are the most expensive part of his inventory, Jacobson said, "Reptiles are the most profitable, because they are easier to take care of." Not all the animals- at the six -acre Pet Ranch Imports are for sale. Jacobson has several monkeys and non-domestic cats as pets. And he also has several "people -eater" dogs that "have no contact with people at all," and protect his ranch stock at night.
