The building will replace existing Building 4 and be erected on the same site. The building combines conference, dining, and health and wellness spaces. Included in this submittal are four copies each of the following: (i) Conceptual Architectural Plan and (ii) (combined) Conceptual Site + Landscape Plan. The new Roche B4ET Forum involves the installation of a 45,000 square foot building on a site in the heart of the Ventana Medical Systems campus. The building site is nestled between Buildings 2, 2E, and 3, and across from 5E, with a height set by the existing structures, establishing a complementary relationship with the rest of the campus. This strategy helps reduce the overall visual impact. Additionally, the integrated mechanical well entirely conceals equipment and keeps it from obstructing any views. The specific siting of the new Forum also establishes a zone of shaded outdoor dining and a complementary public gathering space to the south. The design maintains and improves upon an existing detention basin while effectively balancing cut and fill. Connectivity to the adjacent buildings, open spaces, and surrounding landscape is integrated through the employment of weathering steel covered walkways and a network of sidewalks and landscaped pathways. The Forum serves the function of a central gathering space, housing a cafeteria, auditorium, various sized conference rooms, and other miscellaneous meeting spaces. Color and material palette are designed to closely relate to the natural environment, the desert, and the adjacent Catalina Mountains. Textures have been selected to blend with, recede into, and compliment the adjacent landscape and the existing campus. The Forum's massing prioritizes the view corridor to the Catalina Mountains, orienting individual programs, dining hall seating, outdoor gathering, and primary auditorium and terrace views towards this primary southeast vista. Human scale is carefully considered through the employment of strong horizontal datums, a functional rhythm of mass and glass, and occasional programmatic pop -outs. These all serve to break down the larger building mass. They also help articulate the building's openings and programmatic variations. The ramada shade canopy along the south facade is a contemporary interpretation of the historical Tohono O'odham shade structures. Its height and depth allow the building to take advantage of the Southeast vista without sacrificing performance or energy efficiency. The landscape design celebrates the existing arroyos, the path of water through the site, and the scale of the adjacent landscape. By planting native trees, cacti, and shrubs, the design establishes comfortable microclimates that embrace the natural beauty of the mountains and native landscape.
