HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION
REGULAR SESSION
June 5, 2023

CALL TO ORDER
Chair Lee called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m. Commissioner Pliego was not present for Roll Call,
she arrived at 5:03 p.m. Commissioner Paul left the meeting at 5:05 p.m.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY REPORT ON CURRENT EVENTS
Twink Monrad provided an update of events from the Oro Valley Historical Society. Highlights
included:
A tree will be planted on June 15 at Steam Pump Ranch in honor of the passing of President
Henry Zipf, Jr., the great grandson of George Pusch. A new President will be elected at their
next meeting.
The annual meeting was held in March in the Garage; the Board approved a change of
membership for the Society to a donor-based organization.
The Board is working on events and programs for the coming year (September to April).
There was a four-day experience held at the Heritage Gardens for 35 Oro Valley Basis students.
DEPARTMENT REPORT ON CURRENT EVENTS
Mr. Jankowski provided an update of events that included the following:
Summer Camp is in full swing, hosting 235 campers per week for a nine-week period. This does
not include the additional contracted summer offerings.
The second annual Summer Leaders Worshop was attended by 40 summer camp staff from
Oro Valley, Marana, Tucson, and Pima County. This workshop provided multiple training
sessions to prepare staff for summer recreation jobs.
Work on the BBQ and Bunk Houses continues with completion scheduled for late July.

COUNCIL LIAISON REPORT ON CURRENT EVENTS
Council Member Solomon was absent.
CALL TO AUDIENCE
Chair Lee opened Call to Audience.
Paul Loomis and an Oro Valley resident spoke regarding the Town's budget and the future of historical
preservation.
Tim Tarris, an Oro Valley resident, spoke opposed to the OVCN rezone for historical preservation.
Chair Lee closed Call to Audience.
CONSENT AGENDA
1.Review and approval of the April 3, 2023 Meeting Minutes.
Motion by Chair Auvie Lee, seconded by Commissioner Nicole Casaus to approve the April 3, 2023
minutes of the Historic Preservation Commission.
Vote: 4 - 0 Carried
REGULAR AGENDA
1.PRESENTATION AND DISCUSSION REGARDING HOW TO RUN A PUBLIC MEETING INCLUDING
THE APPLICABLE PARLIAMENTARY RULES AND PROCEDURES
Mr. Andrews provided a presentation and answered questions.
2.DISCUSSION REGARDING THE EXPECTATIONS OF REPORTING ON THE ORO VALLEY
CULTURAL HERITAGE PRESERVATION PLAN
Chair Lee introduced the topic by providing some ideas on how he felt the report should be tackled.
There was considerable discussion amongst the Commission regarding the expectations of reporting.
The topic will be added to a future agenda.
3.DISCUSSION OF POSSIBLE TOPICS FOR THE WILLIAM H ADLER HISTORIC EXPOSITORY
WRITING CONTEST FOR LOCAL 4TH GRADE STUDENTS
Chair Lee introduced the topic and provided some history of William H. Adler and the significance of
the contest. There was discussion amongst the Commission regarding possible question ideas. The
topic will be added to a future agenda.
ADJOURNMENT
Motion by Chair Auvie Lee, seconded by Member Ronald Scantlan to adjourn the meeting at 6:05 p.m.
