CALL TO ORDER
Chair Lee called the meeting to order at 5:02 p.m.

Attendees: Devon Sloan, Oro Valley Historical Society
HISTORICAL SOCIETY REPORT ON CURRENT EVENTS
Ms. Sloan gave a detailed report of the activities and events for the Historical Society. The Society
continues to collaborate with the Town on many projects, including providing a program for the Family
Campout scheduled for October 14. She handed the Commissioners the new brochure for Steam
Pump Ranch and a copy of an article from September's OV Style Magazine that lists the exhibits from
October through April. She invited the Commissioners to visit the Ranch each month to view the
exhibits. Jim Williams, former President of the Society, has published a new book, Oro Valley, The
First 50 Years, and can be purchased at their booth any Saturday at the Ranch.

DEPARTMENT REPORT ON CURRENT EVENTS
Mr. Jankowski reported that Parks and Recreation had another successful summer which included the
addition of an all-day camp at Steam Pump Ranch. A ribbon cutting was held in July to celebrate the
completion of the SPR BBQ and Bunk House projects. Staff continues to work with OVHS and the
Santa Cruz River Heritage Project for grant-funded signage at the Ranch. The replacement structure
for the Farmer's Market is in the early discussion stages. In other Parks news, Jered Plasentilla has
been promoted to the Parks Supervisor position and the department was awarded a $1M grant from
Arizona State Parks for an amenity at Naranja Park.
COUNCIL LIAISON REPORT ON CURRENT EVENTS
Council Liaison Solomon had nothing to report.

Chair Lee opened Call to Audience.
Tim Tarris, an Oro Valley resident, spoke in support of the Linda Vista Citrus Estates becoming an
historic neighborhood.
Chair Lee closed Call to Audience.
CONSENT AGENDA
1.Review and approval of the June 5, 2023 Meeting Minutes.
Motion by Chair Auvie Lee, seconded by Commissioner Nicole Casaus to approve the June 5, 2023
meeting minutes.
Vote: 5 - 0 Carried
REGULAR SESSION AGENDA
1.DISCUSSION REGARDING THE EXPECTATIONS OF REPORTING ON THE ORO VALLEY
CULTURAL HERITAGE PRESERVATION PLAN
Chair Lee opened the topic for discussion. Questions were asked, discussed and answered, and after
much conversation and clarification it was concluded that sectional presentations by each
Commissioner would be added to the November agenda.
2.DISCUSSION AND SELECTION OF TOPICS FOR THE WILLIAM H ADLER HISTORIC EXPOSITORY
WRITING CONTEST FOR LOCAL 4TH GRADE STUDENTS
Chair Lee opened the topic for discussion. After much discussion, two questions were selected:

Who is Francisco Romero? Where did he settle and what challenges did he and his family
encounter? Consider food, clothing, shelter, water, and threats to their safety.

Oro Valley is known for its appreciation of the arts. How is this appreciation a continuation of
ancient tradition in this area? What art forms did the Hohokam leave that we now appreciate?
Identify and describe three of the area's prehistoric art forms.

Based on discussion, Mr. Jankowski will submit options for a third question to be selected at the
October meeting.
Motion by Commissioner Michael Paul, seconded by Vice Chair Puntadeleste Bozeman to approve the
two questions as discussed and instruct staff to submit additional questions so that a third question may
be selected at the October meeting.
Vote: 5 - 0 Carried
ADJOURNMENT
Motion by Chair Auvie Lee, seconded by Commissioner Nicole Casaus to adjourn at 5:47 p.m.
Vote: 5 - 0 Carried
