WHAT IS SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION?
www.grfdaz.gov
Spontaneous combustion of oily laundry occurs when a flammable or combustible substance is slowly heated to its
ignition point through oxidation. A substance will begin to release heat as it oxidizes. If this heat has no way to escape,
like in a dryer or pile, the temperature will raise to a level high enough to ignite the oil and ignite the laundry.
TIPS FOR STORING AND DISPOSING OF OILY RAGS
1. Store rags in an airtight, noncombustible metal container: The metal container should be filled with water and
an oil breakdown detergent, example Dawn. Never store rags in a pile.
2. Disposal of rags:
a. Noncombustible metal container filled with water.
b. Soak rags in water and let dry. Rags should be spread out in a safe flat area.
3. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations: Since manufacturer's use different oils in their products, it is
important to follow their warnings and disposal instructions.
