CALL TO ORDER
Chair Thomae called the meeting to order at 5:01 p.m.

CALL TO AUDIENCE-At this time,any member of the public is allowed to address the
Commission on any issue not listed on today's agenda.Pursuant to the Arizona Open
Meeting Law,individual Commission Members may ask Town staff to review the matter,
ask that the matter be placed on a future agenda,or respond to criticism made by
speakers. However,the Historic Preservation Commission may not discuss or take
legal action matters raised during"Call to the Audience."In order to speak during"Call
to Audience"please specify what you wish to discuss when completing the blue speaker
card.
INFORMATIONAL ITEMS(DISCUSSION MUST BE LIMITED TO INFORMATION AND
CLARIFICATION)
Ms.Dellerman updated the Commissioners on upcoming events and shared a few
details of the educational items.

A. Approval of September 4,2018 Minutes

MOTION:A motion was made by Chair Thomae and seconded by Commissioner
Bohen approve the September 4,2018 Minutes as written.

REGULAR AGENDA
1. UPDATE FROM THE ORO VALLEY HISTORICAL SOCIETY(DISCUSSION
MUST BE LIMITED TO INFORMATION AND CLARIFICATION)
Roxy Johnson,President of the Historic Society informed the Commission of their brand
new website,she thanked Ms.Dellerman for volunteering possibilities,and she
described the fund raising opportunity through the drawing of a vehicle donation by Jim
Click.
2. INTRODUCE NEW COMMISSIONER MIKE WILSON
Chair Thomae suggested we introduce Commissioner Wilson when he attends the next
meeting.Ms.Dellerman said he was a professional golfer,currently sells real estate at
Oro Valley Country Club,and has served on the Parks&Recreation Advisory Board.
3. ASSIGN A COMMISSIONER THE TASK OF CREATING THE ANNUAL
REPORT
Vice Chair Huff indicated that the Commission mostly needs to have the documents and
information assembled to meet the annual requirements. Commissioner Bohen agreed
to take the task.
4. DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION ON ESSAY CONTEST MANAGEMENT
AND SCHEDULE AS PRESENTED BY COMMISSIONER HUFF
Commissioner Huff described the essay process. He listed a few potential topics
including the history of cattle ranching,musical influence,Hohokam Art Legacy,and a
history of producing professional athletes that are from Oro Valley. The Commission
discussed the basis for including the sports aspect in the contest as a means of
interesting students.The Commissioners agreed that creating specific questions can
better assist opening the minds of young children. The Commissioners decided to just
include three questions related to;cattle ranching,Hohokam Art Legacy,and a history
of producing professional athletes that are from Oro Valley.
MOTION:A motion was made by Chair Thomae and seconded by Commissioner
Bohen have three essay subjects relating to history of cattle ranching,Oro Valley
and Amphi High School athletes,and Hohokam art specifically directed to petroglyphs.

5. DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION OF ASSIGNING COMMISSIONER(S)
THE TASK OF INVESTIGATING WHAT OTHER COMMUNITIES OF OUR SIZE
ARE DOING IN HISTORIC PRESERVATION
Chair Thomae and other Commissioners discussed links of other Communities as
presented. The Commission reviewed the Town of Marana's site and historic
Scottsdale.Commissioner Thomae agreed to review Scottsdale and Lake Havasu,
Commissioner Biel agreed to review Prescott,Commissioner Bohen agreed to look
at Marana and more sites.Commissioner Munden took the task of reviewing
Carefree. It was agreed that the Commissioners will provide Mollie two or three items
and possibly links of their findings for the next meeting.
6. DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION ON STEAM PUMP RANCH WORK IN
PROCESS AND BEFORE AND AFTER PHOTOS
Chair Thomae suggested the photos be tabled until all photos are assembled.
7. DEPARTMENT REPORT(DISCUSSION MUST BE LIMITED TO INFORMATION
AND CLARIFICATION)
Ms.Dellerman reported on several upcoming fall events presented by Parks&
Recreation. She also described events at the Ranch,including two weddings,hay
rides,Second Saturdays,a bicycle swap meet,the Monster Mash event for older kids,
Fall Break Camp,and other events.Home school educators scheduled two field trips.
Ms.Dellerman further discussed a guest speaker coming to the Historic Society.
8. FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS-(The Historic Preservation Commission may bring
forth general topics for future meeting agendas.Discussion must be limited to
information and clarification).Next Historic Preservation Commission meeting
tentatively scheduled for Monday,November 5,2018 to begin at 5:00 p.m.
MOTION:A motion was made by Chair Thomae and seconded by Vice Chair Huff to
place on future agenda the following items:
1.understand who and how to identify the best people to give tours of OV and SPR
2.get the community interested in events and festivals related to music
3.set aside time for discussion of a new Chair person
ADJOURNMENT
MOTION:A motion was made by Chair Thomae to adjourn at 6:00 pm
