Challenges We Face •Budget cuts and recovery •Arizona school funding is set by the state, not local districts •State funding failed to even keep pace with inflation for many years •The Great Recession amplified the effects of historical funding shortfalls. •Example: 90% of school district capital budgets were cut by the state legislature for more than a decade, dramatically impacting our ability to maintain and improve our facilities and grounds •Recent restoration of capital funds has set us on a course of working to "catch up" •Recruitment of staff •Aggregate Expenditure Limit -- recurring funding cliff each year Funding Perspective Source: "Making the Grade, 2023", Education Law Center Funding Perspective Source: "Making the Grade, 2023", Education Law Center Funding Perspective Source: "Making the Grade, 2023", Education Law Center Operational Efficiency Teacher Pay Context Local District Average Teacher Pay Sunnyside $64,783 STATE AVERAGE $62,934 Flowing Wells $60,702 Catalina Foothills $59,597 Tucson Unified $59,430 AMPHITHEATER $57,586 Marana $56,066 Tanque Verde $55,996 Sahuarita $53,712 Vail $53,244 School Performance – AZ Labels •Arizona Revised Statutes § 15-241 requires the Arizona Department of Education, subject to final adoption by the State Board of Education, to develop an annual achievement profile ("grades") for every public school in the state based on an A through F scale. •The system measures: •Year to year student academic growth •Proficiency in English Language Arts, Math and Science •Proficiency and academic growth of English Language Learners •Indicators of elementary student readiness for high school •Indicators of high school student readiness for college and careers •High school graduation rates. School Performance – AZ Labels •Last year, all Oro Valley Amphitheater schools received “Excelling” (“A”) ratings. •This year, 8 of our Oro Valley Schools received “Excelling” labels and the other 2 received “Highly Performing” labels. •District-wide, our trend of improving our school wide labels continued. •We’re not done. Not by a long shot.
