HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Water Resources Subcommittee - 8/5/2019 (2) MINUTES ORO VALLEY WATER UTILITY COMMISSION WATER RESOURCES AND CONSERVATION SUBCOMMITTEE AUGUST 5,2019 ORO VALLEY WATER UTILITY CONFERENCE ROOM 11000 N.LA CANADA DRIVE ORO VALLEY,ARIZONA CALL TO ORDER—Chair Campbell called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m. PRESENT: Anne Campbell,Chair Charlie Hurt,Member Byron McMillan,Member STAFF PRESENT: Peter Abraham,P.E.,Water Utility Director Karn Boyce,Water Conservation Specialist CALL TO AUDIENCE—No speakers. 1.APPROVAL FEBRUARY 20,2019 MINUTES MOTION:Member McMillan MOVED to approve the minutes as written.Member Hurt seconded the motion.MOTION carried,3-0. 2.UPDATE ON CONSERVATION KIDS REPORT Ms.Boyce reviewed the Conservation Kids Report: • Number of participants • Instructor information • Survey information to the teachers • 700-800 children have attended Ms.Boyce discussed the Conservation Kids program contractor,curriculum,educational materials and grade-levels/schools included. 3.METER DATA TRANSFER RELATING TO WATERSMART ALERTS Ms.Boyce explained factors contributing to the potential delay experienced when receiving a leak alert notification for high water usage: • Notifications differ—set by the Utility and set by customers • The Utility's AMI meters hold and transfer data approximately every 4-6 hours. Programming them to transfer real time data would cause the batteries to deplete quicker,causing frequent replacement and maintenance cost increases. • Billing system interfaces with AMI meters and WaterSmart which requires interpretation and internal operations • Blocked meters are a potential cause for delays Ms.Boyce commented the Utility hopes to get real time data in the future. 4.DEVELOP WATER RESOURCES AND CONSERVATION SUBCOMMITTEE WORK PLAN AND TIME FRAMES Mr.Abraham began discussing the purview of the subcommittee.He explained the Water Code is now an objective in the Town's Strategic Leadership Plan.Chair Campbell suggested the code update will provide the subcommittee direction. The Subcommittee members discussed the following considerations for the work plan: • Welcome kit for new residents to include landscaping information • Adopt a long-term effort,goals,methodologies and measurement strategies to reduce landscape irrigation usage • Use for potential extra reclaimed water for the good of the community considering Town priorities possibly including environmental benefits The subcommittee plans to meet in September/October and discuss the following: 1) Review the current welcome packet and provide recommendations 2) Methods to measure irrigation water usage and statistic comparisons 3) Quantity of excess reclaimed water the Utility could have if additional golf courses close. Scenarios to include:closure of Rancho Vistoso,18-holes and 36-holes FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS—No discussion. ADJOURNMENT MOTION:A motion was made by Member Hurt and seconded by Member McMillan to adjourn the meeting at 11:45 a.m.MOTION carried,3-0.
