We appreciate your service to Secretary Anne -Marie Braswell Our community. Golder Ranch Fire District For full disclosure ... I'm Dave Perry, president and CEO of the Greater Oro Past chair Valley Chamber of Commerce 9 years now, and a proud resident of Oro Valley. Toni Dorsey Our Chamber has a $40,000 operating agreement for services with government. AAA Arizona I want to address Item 1 on the April 1 agenda, "discussion regarding actions the Director; council may take to assist Oro Valley businesses affected by the COVID-19 virus." Veronica Apodaca Since the end of last week, I have had telephone conversations with several Northwest Healthcare / individuals about actions the council may take. With regard to business, local Oro Valley Hospital government's primary abilities are those of taxation and regulation. You have the Ron Arenas option to set local sales tax and lodging tax rates. You have the policy option to Picture Rocks Cooling, direct specific regulation be applied to business. Heating and Plumbing Our Chamber applauds your decision to temporarily waive enforcement of Michelle Armstrong Tohono Chul Park ordinances regarding temporary 'si ns. This step might be small, it might be symbolic, but when this consequential viral moment for business has passed, Oro Jeff OO ooRoo aura Valle merchants must communicate with the public as widely as possible. All OV businesses, Chamber member and Bruce Baca Coldwell Banker non-member alike, are going to need a quick ram a of sales when this is over. g g q ramp -up Residential Brokerage To help business get through this never -before -seen time, people have talked Dinny Cosyns about the possible suspension of the local -option 2.5 percent transaction privilege NorthStar Strategies tax. As Chamber president / CEO, I have asked if the local -option 6 percent Cindy Webb Hanson lodging tax could be temporarily halted. Oneaz Credit union Alas, those are terrifically complicated propositions, with regard to timing, Tom Hebner implementation, record-keeping, consistent application, revenue impact, political Roche Tissue Diagnostics ramification ... let's not go there. Instead, let's talk about what is feasible. El Ndoye For some time now, our Chamber has recognized a foundational weakness in Canyon Community Bank common data regarding Oro Valley business. Town government has information Ottonsuarez about Oro Valley businesses. Our Chamber has information about its member El conquistador Tucson, businesses. That information does not synchronize. Those databases are A Hilton Resort incomplete, and require endless updating. Jack Talmage During this crisis, with the help of the town's Margie Adler, Chamber staffers Oro Valley Country Club have been combing the community, learning who is open, who is closed, and what Jeremy Thompson Cox Ex -officio JJ Johnston Town of Oro Valley Page 2 special hours or considerations they may have. We're trying to consolidate that information onto the Chamber's website, and direct the public to it. The information changes constantly. For more than a week now, our business development director Martin Reichgott has been calling members. We have compiled a small mountain of information, which we can share if you are interested. Yesterday, Martin learned that Chamber member and Oro Valley hotel the Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott has a new director of sales, Sarai Reynoza, who's been there less than a month. Who knew? The Chamber didn't, and I suspect the town did not, either. We've got to remedy that information void, so that when crises occur, and when it's time to communicate information from Town, Chamber, either or both, we know who to reach and how to do it, easily and quickly. I have had preliminary conversations with Town Manager Mary Jacobs about improving commonly shared data. Our Chamber would be pleased to help put a better data building block in place. As part of our operating agreement with the Town, our Chamber has been planning a business summit, originally scheduled for May 21. That date is no longer feasible. And the subject matter for the business summit is evolving, from customer service and town connection to .... How does business recover from COVID-19? We want to put on that summit, when the time is right, in either an in-person or digital environment, and we would ask the Town's help in putting it together. Our businesses need this information. COVID-19 has affected Oro Valley businesses in wildly different ways. Some are busier than ever, primarily our grocers and household goods retailers. Some are hiring. But this pandemic has hurt so many businesses and people very deeply. Hundreds have lost their jobs, right here, and more will be unemployed in the weeks ahead. Federal aid is coming, but we don't know when. All of us are trying to find solutions to a problem we've never experienced. It's frustrating. To do a small part, our Chamber and its Foundation have just sent a check for $10,050 to Walmart, to buy 133 grocery cards at $75 each to share with employers and their displaced workers. We're going to ask our members and the public for further donations, and we've applied for a $5,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation to buy more cards. It's a little thing we can do to keep employers and their furloughed workers connected, so when the time is right they can pick up where they left off. We appreciate the work you and others are doing, and we're grateful for your heartfelt concern for our businesses and their workers. We've never been here before. The only way through it is communication, collaboration, listening and learning, the sharing and vetting of ideas, and the resulting actions both large and small that can get business and community in Oro Valley fully up and running once more. Our Chamber is proud and humbled to do its part toward recovery. Recognizing this may be a formality, please know the Greater Oro Valley Chamber supports temporary waiver and /or modification of the town's temporary sign ordinances for businesses affected by the COVID-19 virus, Item 2 on your regular agenda April 1. At this critical time, all businesses — even those running hard, but more directly those who have experienced steep, fast declines — need leeway and flexibility in how they communicate through signage with the general public. Public safety is paramount, of course. But we know several businesses, now shuttered, that won't open again. Everyone is worried about their future. Your relative leniency on sign code enforcement may help them get to that future. It's appreciated. We're grateful for all you are doing amidst the tumult. Thank you for your time and service.
