Thank you for submitting architecture review of the proposed change in canopy color for the Mister Car Wash.
Staff reviewed your proposal with the following Architectural Design Standards from the Oro Valley Zoning
Code:
1. Incorporating accessory structures(screen walls,canopies,carports,parking structures,and signage
structures)and shall reflect the character of the primary building(s)in terms of scale,materials,colors and
style(2.2.A.1.b.2.).
2. Prototypical corporate architecture shall be modified to reflect the design and style of the overall project
and shall incorporate consistent colors,material and architectural elements of the overall project. Single
use sites shall reflect local design and style influences which moderate corporate influenced design and
style(2.2.B.C.4.).
3. Primary colors should be used judiciously and typically as accents only(2.2.E.3).
Please reconsider using red as the predominate color of the canopies. Staff recommends incorporating the Design
Standard elements listed above in a second submittal.
For a second submittal,please submit 3 copies with the above corrections on 11"x 17"sheets. If you have any

Sarah,
Signs and architecture are two different things. Our sign code does allow for more colors which allows
businesses to clearly identify themselves. Architecture is another set of standards. Architecture isn't
about matching signs on a property but creating a higher standard of development as called out in my
letter. Can you pick another color of canopy that is acceptable to your corporate image and would meet
the design standards in my letter?
Photos of other locations in Tucson wouldn't help. It is not the goal of Oro Valley to have developments
look like other developments in other cities.
I recommend taking a look a recent developments in Oro Valley such as the new Quik Trip gas station,
Taco Bell and Mc Donald's. They modified their corporate look to fit within the community.

There is no stipulation on color choice as indicated in the meeting I attended, correct? As you have seen
in the total submitted package, obviously everything goes together with our logo, and our color scheme.
The green will appear out of place, once it's all said and done.
You want us to re-submit a second time for the canopy color? Would it help for me to provide you with
images of sites in Tucson, and elsewhere in the country establishing our look/brand?
Please help me to understand what needs doing here.

To All,
I believe that I spoke to Greg about this a while ago. The applicant ranted to Dave Perry already
and he contacted me on the subject a few weeks ago. I told him to have the applicant's
representative reach out and give me a call. I've heard nothing since. In fact, I'm just returning
from getting my car washed There. The canopy is still red. However the main canopy is still
green.
I explained the process to Dave. He was ok with my explanation because it is what it is. I think
the best route now is DIS to head the contact and if the applicant is unresponsive, we will
implement their tactics and use Dave as a go between. We need to make it clear that the
applicant is both not following the rules as well as being non responsive in getting this cleared
up.

You have surmised correctly, it is a moot point but we are curious to know. It does not matter
what happened with Capin. These guys need to follow current procedures. We can check Capin,
or Patty may already know, but this is not the issue.
I think we should let Greg know what is up since the Chamber is involved, but I don't know how
the concern was expressed by them or by who—Dave or his staff.

I have not sent this up the ladder to Amanda or Greg, because I wanted to get the full scope of what
was happening. Amanda is on vacation so I'm just practicing due diligence.
I noticed that Capin Car wash had applied for something similar in file OV1308-11 and did receive
an administrative approval. I don't know if your team wants to research this file to verify any
consistencies or if it is a moot point. Let me know if I can do anything to assist.

I wanted you to be aware of this situation.
Mr. Carwash is the applicant and they are apparenity frustrated we could not administratively
approve a change from green to red canopies.
Canopies are considered part of architecture and we have an applicant using the Chamber to vent
frustration over our process.
The applicant has said nothing to us about this and we are reaching out to them today. However
the process is the process.
This could potentially hit the media or Councilmembers attention- I do not know if Greg needs to
be aware at this point.

ZV1200310 was opened on 06/18/12 as a result of the revised canopy colors. It was closed
on 07/03/12 after it was noted that application was made to CDRB to revise the canopy
color to red. We have not followed up outside of this.

I called Mr. Hail with Mister Car Wash to discuss his CDRB case. He has not returned my call today. I'll
try again on Monday and follow up with an email.
If he doesn't communicate with me by Monday afternoon I will calf the Commerce person to chat.

Zoning Code 22.9.A.Applicability
1. Design Review Applicability
The CDRB shall base its decision on the design principles in subsection D of this section and the design
standards within the zoning code.
Design Standards Section 1.3 Title,Applicability and Interpretation,
1. Title: This Chapter may be cited as the"Design Standards".
2. Applicability: The provisions of this Chapter shall apply to all new development within the Town of Oro
Valley. The provisions of this shall apply to any modification or alteration of any existing building, structure
and associated site improvements within Oro Valley, except as expressly provided in this Chapter.

RE: 2nd Review-Architecture for Mister Car Wash located at 8175 N.Oracle Road OV1312-08.
Mr. Hail,
Town staff met with Dave Perry and Sarah Mendez on August 28,2012 about the proposed color changes to the
canopies at your Oro Valley location. She quickly followed up with an email showing a revised color change to
include a beige canopy with a red stripe.
The proposed changes,as shown on the attached document,were administratively approved by the Town. There
are no additional submittals or meetings required for this change. We look forward to seeing this these
improvements take place.
Thank you for providing an agreeable solution for all parties. Ms. Mendez did an excellent job presenting the
challenges and solutions for the project. Thank you again.
