ORO VALLEY HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION
REGULAR SESSION
October 1, 2012

CALL TO ORDER AT OR AFTER 5:00 P.M.
Chair Pullara called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m.

CALL TO THE AUDIENCE
Resident Bill Adler explained that it is difficult for the public to find information
regarding historic preservation in the Town and more needs to be done to improve the
availability of this information. He suggested that this item be on a future agenda and
that the Town work with the Communications and Information Technology
Departments on this item.
1. REVIEW AND/OR APPROVAL OF THE SEPTEMBER 10,
2012 REGULAR SESSION MINUTES
MOTION: A motion was made by Commissioner Hannon and seconded by
Commissioner Myerson to approve the September 10, 2012 minutes as written.

2. DOCENT PROGRAM - DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION

Recreation Manager Lynanne Dellerman announced there will be an opportunity for
people to sign up to become docents at Steam Pump Ranch. The Oro Valley Historical
Society will host three tours each month and the Town of Oro Valley is dedicated to
having one staff member present every week.
Commissioner Nagy created a guide for the tour including a schematic of the ranch
house. She indicated that the kitchen in the ranch house has limited space and this
should be considered when planning a tour.
3. ADDITIONAL TRAINING FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION
COMMISSION MEMBERS - DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION
The Commission discussed the following:
- Community Academy.
- Information regarding Steam Pump Ranch.
Training on architectural and historic standards.
- National Registry of Historic Places.
Training by Dr. William Doelle, CEO Desert Archeology, regarding Honey Bee Village
similar to past trainings.
Appropriate methods for preservation and architecture.
- Joyce Rychener could provide training on the garden.
- Site tours.
Chair Pullara will work with Parks Recreation Library & Cultural Resources Director
Ainsley Legner on this item.
4. STEAM PUMP RANCH - DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION
A. NATIONAL SOCIETY DAUGHTERS OF COLONIAL WARS INC
DONATION PRESENTATION
Ms. Dellerman announced that Commissioner Strandskov, Chair Pullara and herself will
provide a presentation to this group on November 10, 2012.
B. INVENTORY OF BUNK HOUSES
Commissioner Nagy discussed her safety concerns with cleaning out the bunk houses
to retrieve important artifacts. Ms. Legner indicated that staff does not have this type of
experience. Ms. Legner may have information at the next meeting including the process
and costs associated.
C. SIGNAGE

Ms. Dellerman reported that a sign has been placed in front of Steam Pump Ranch and
two magnets are on the sides of the truck. A stand will hold the plaque for the National
Registry of Historic Places which will be unveiled at the Fall Festival.
D. FALL FESTIVAL
Ms. Dellerman reported on the upcoming activities at the event. Ms. Legner encouraged
everyone to get their tickets ahead of time. The wine and beer tasting is a fund raiser for
the Oro Valley Historical Society. Dinner tickets will provide revenue to
help cover costs.
Ms. Dellerman reported that banners went out today and there will be an advertisement
in the Northwest Explorer as well as a media release.
5. HPC WORK PLAN UPDATE ON ITEMS ASSIGNED - DISCUSSION
AND POSSIBLE ACTION
Chair Pullara received the draft Fredericksburg plan in Word and Ms. Legner will send a
copy of the current plan in Word and get the Cultural Resources Plan in Word, if
possible. Commissioner Myerson will start work this week with Chair Pullara and the
goal will be to complete it by the end of next week.
6. SCHEDULING NEXT HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION
MEETING TENTATIVELY FOR MONDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2012 TO
BEGIN AT 5:00 P.M. - DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION
No report.
7. FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS
Discussion on keeping activities in the public eye.
Review of the Fall Festival.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Ms. Legner received a call from the aunt of the Leiber granddaughter and she will be a
resource in determining some of the people in the photos and providing
information. Staff will provide her with the Town's collection.
ADJOURNMENT
MOTION: A motion was made by Commissioner Hannon and seconded by
Commissioner Nagy to adjourn the meeting at 5:54 p.m.
