DEVELOPMENT OF THE FRIENDS OF THE PARKS—DISCUSSION Chair Tom Honebrink encouraged the Parks&Recreation Advisory Board to brainstorm regarding the proposed Friends of the Parks organization. What is a Friends of the Parks?What is their function? • Advisory • Non Profit 501(c)3 • Advocacy • Planned Giving • Docents • Political • Dual Support • Promotions • Historical • Responsibilities • Parks • Relationships with • Recreation • Historical Preservation • Financial Commission • Grants, etc... • Parks&Recreation • Grassroots Advisory Board • Membership • Town Council • Demographics • Scholarship • Size 1/12/05 Study Session Minutes, Parks &Recreation Advisory Board What are the differences between the Parks&Recreation Advisory Board and Friends of the Parks? • Authority • Financial • Meeting Requirements • Memberships • Politics • Lack of/Restrictions • Size Who does the work? • Local Sports Leagues/Organizations • Oro Valley residents • Oro Valley Parks&Recreation Clubs • Parks&Recreation Advisory Board—Can the Parks&Recreation Advisory Board initiate? • Town Resources In response to a question by Board Member Robert Evans,Parks&Recreation Administrator Ainsley Reeder commented that the Friends of the Library explained volunteer commitment as their biggest challenge. Board Member Margot Hurst briefly described the City of Tucson Parks &Recreation Parks Foundation formation.Ms.Hurst commented it took a long time to establish. Chair Tom Honebrink encouraged Parks&Recreation Advisory Board Members to seek out potential"Friends"to serve on the Oro Valley Friends of Parks. Chair Tom Honebrink recognized Mr.Bill Adler, 10720 N. Eagle Eye Place. Mr. Adler recommended the Parks&Recreation Advisory Board consider recruiting members that have fund raising skills. Council Member Terry Parrish commented that the Parks&Recreation Advisory Board should consider the main objectives of the Friends of the Parks -membership, fund raising,Naranja Town Site development. Vice Chair Jody Sinding commented that the original thought when the Parks&Recreation Advisory Board placed the Friends of the Parks on their work plan was the friends group could assist with funding for historical sites not just parks. 2. ADJOURNMENT Chair adjourned the Wednesday, January 12, 2005 Parks&Recreation Advisory Board Study Session Meeting at 6:45 p.m. with no objections.
